Oaxaca

A selection of things from my experience in Oaxaca, México.

This place is so rich in culture and art. There are murals everywhere you look, and streets are plastered with “grabado”, engravings. There was always a wedding or a traditional celebration going on outside the church in the main square, Plaza Santo Domingo. Vibrant and musical.

Of course, I had to include mezcal, “por todo mal y todo bien” (for the bad times, and for the good), Mexico’s traditional distilled drink made from the heart of the Agave plant, or the “Maguey”, which only flowers once in its lifetime.

Also, “chapulines”, or deep-fried grasshoppers, which are one of Oaxaca’s culinary delicacies. Great protein to add to your tortillas.

And, Cocijo, the rain god of the pre-Colombian Zapotec civilisation, who was believed to bring storms, thunder and lightning to the lands.

Fine liner pen and watercolour.
