Moss Resources

Anyone who knows me knows that I love moss! Here is a small collection of resources I made for an educational workshop to communicate the life cycle of a moss. Mosses have two forms of reproduction: asexual/ vegetative reproduction and sexual reproduction. They reproduce both by producing spores and by a male sperm fertilising a female egg.

And some ID cards for some simple species identification practice with commonly found species in British woodlands. Photographs from The British Bryological Society - check out their amazing website and online identification guides if you want to go out moss spotting near you!

  • Common haircap moss (Polytrichum commune)

  • Swan’s neck thyme moss (Mnium hornum)

  • Broom fork moss (Dicranum scoparium)
