Heather and its delicate lilac flowers swathe the moors in late summer. The name Calluna, from the Greek kallunein, meaning “to sweep”, reflects its traditional use in broom-making. Heather burning is a common land management practice on the moors, encouraging the growth of new shoots, palatable to grouse and deer.

Here, Heather sweeps ashes to the chime of the gun cartridges she collected from the grouse moor.
